Otto & Astrid: Eurosmash! (Die Roten Punkte)

Underbelly, Cowgate (Venue 61)

Saturday 5th August 22.10

8.5/10

A few years ago DARKCHATTER Carl & I thoroughly enjoyed Die Roten Punkte and were delighted to discover they were returned to the Edinburgh Festival in 2017 to regain their success and credibility (?) by creating songs in a more popular music style.

For a show in the comedy section, the music is sublime ( and I duly have the show's CD to prove it). The 2 siblings play their designated instruments (guitar and drums) extremely well as well as possessing impressive singing voices.

The comedy comes from clever lyrics and their inter-action with each other & the audience when Astrid attempts to sabotage

a possible romance between her brother and a woman in the auditorium. Impressively ( and very importantly) you can hear

most of the words, which in front of a loud, driving rock band is quite rare (a lot of concert mixing desks could learn from

them tonight).

I am a sucker for a front row seat (which although I never actively seek it out, honest) mean I am often involved in the action.

Today (clearly, not against my will) I ended up unravelling Astrid (not a sentence I ever expected to type) and was rewarded

with a kiss on the lips.

In recent years I have become rather concerned about a new trend, the drunken Saturday night audience. Unknowingly,

Astrid invited 4 very drunk people into the front row who proceeded to disrupt proceedings although our perfomers battled

gamely on. This is not an isolated incident but somehow, needs to be controlled in the future. Eventually they departed to

a resounding chorus of "Fuck You" from the entire audience and we could breathe a sigh of relief.

If you have seen Otto & Astrid before you have a rough idea about what you will see but when it is this good it doesn't matter.

Great fun.

Otto & Astrid are performing Eurosmash!

at Underbelly Cowgate (Venue 61) until August 27th (not 15th)
