Just the Tonic at The Caves (Venue 88)
Wednesday 9th August 16.05
I head next to The Caves with the two 8-year olds in tow for a show about making promises to your kids. Hopefully they will learn a lesson about parents not always being able to deliver on what we say, especially as we learn that this promise is that Jonny will play at the O2 Arena in London. It’s a promise made to Mabel, his then tiny daughter who 5 years later finds out about the promise and (as 5 year olds do) refuses to let it go.
Awsum takes us on an entertaining, interactive story that includes members of Boyzone, kids parties, Sky Sports presenters,
Ant & Dec and Simon Cowell. Sometimes with a musical comedian the music or the comedy can suffer as the performer is
better suited to the other, Awsum however has a knack for both. His songs are catchy and the audience more than willing to
join in, some will stick with you for a while longer and you’ll catch yourself humming a tune and wondering where it came from.
His storytelling is also excellent and with the aid of the computer and projector he weaves an interesting and funny tale that
keeps the entire room entertained for the full hour.
Given that the story is about keeping promises to your kids (and I am sat with two of them front and centre) there are things
that resonate all the more for a parent and like me you might just find yourself welling up a little to go with the big laughs. This is
not just a show for parents though, the kids loved it (see below) and the whole room seemed to do so too with faces from young
to old smiling as they left.
Reviews by 8 Year Olds
It was a show about promises.
During some songs he made us sing "DAYO" ,"YES YES YES THIS TIME" or "NO NO NOT THIS TIME" and Daddy got to sing on his own. The best thing about it was that he showed us slides that told us a story of a promise he gave to his daughter when she was little.
I recommend that anyone aged 5-80 should see it. It was funny in some bits and he sent nearly 60 letters to famous people! He wanted to play at the O2.
But did he? Watch the show to find out.
