DarkChat have been fans of Mr H for many years though it was with his 2016 creation, Anna Mann, that we felt he reached a new creative high.
Last year she cured depression but this year she has captured the political zeitgeist and has turned her unique talents to counter the current worldwide fascist tendencies.
As always she believes in a grand entrance and this year she has pushed a cheesy classic back into our consciousness
again (whether we wanted it there or not). Then we were off.
As I found myself repeating "Anna Mann is the greatest actress of her generation she used the magic power of theatre
to answer questions that have tormented man (& woman)kind throughout history eg "what is a fascist"; "what does one
look like", " how do we stop them" etc?
Anna isn't the kind of person who provides generic sound-bite answers. She has done her groundwork, interviewing
"real people" of Britain and bringing them to life before our very eyes.
Colin Hoult frequently appears on television in "character" roles in which he excels, but he is a MAJOR talent. Many
people tread this route but no-one can back it up with his quality of material, even his asides have more thought &
insight than most people's shows. He is also a consummate performer in complete control of his audience and material.
For a comedy show it is very politically astute, ignoring the obvious jokes with Hoult subtly showing his understanding of
how we find ourselves in this position.
He involves the audience without making them feel uncomfortable and showing his compassion (in character) by constantly referring to an older gentleman who clearly wasn't quite sure what was happening!
I always like to start our festival with a bang and in this show I hit perfection straight away. On the negative side I may have peaked too soon and will feel lucky to find another show as good this year. (But that doesn't stop us trying).
